A Letter to My Younger Self

Dear me,

You just turned 17 and feel like you are winning the world. You decide to fly across the horizon towards new adventures. You land in a new city and watch a different world, running and chasing something you still need to figure out. Slowly, you realise everyone is chasing life. Life includes money, fame, happiness, peace, love, and everything else. You don’t know what to choose. So you run after everything you feel is a good choice. And you know what, it is okay. You are supposed to make mistakes. You still have lots of time to figure out what you want. In the journey, sometimes you run, and sometimes you crawl. It happens to the best of us. But you keep moving forward. You make some fantastic friends along the way and cherish the moments. You refuse to believe that they will not reach the finish line with you. But dear, they’ve got their tracks to complete, right? On your way, you are confused if the left turn is the right choice or if the right path will have any hopes left. The journey seems daunting as well as rewarding. You often question your intuition so much that you distrust your heart.

You are scared to move further and hang on to whatever you’re left with. You look around, and it’s too dark and lonely in the middle of the night. Out of the blue, you wake up and see a thin streak of yellow light above you. You don’t know how long the warmth is going to last. So, you pick the leftover pieces of your life and try to move ahead. In a few steps, there is again so much darkness around you. As days pass, you realise you can no longer control the intensity of darkness. But you can choose to light a fire on your own. You collect sticks and tiny dry leaves and build a fire within you. You hold on to anything that can keep you alive and safe. You learn to control the flames so your world doesn’t get burned down. You go on lighting torches to make way for others coming behind. You dream of love. Love for yourself. Respect for yourself. Your heart fuels the fire to keep going until you see the end line. A reminder in your heart always tells you to go ahead and complete the journey.

Sometimes, you stop to look around and see if you’ve got company. At first, you don’t see anyone around. You think you are the only one struggling and winning. Slowly, you see misty figures walking along the barely visible paths. They are carrying bags which you cannot touch or feel. Then you realise you are not alone. Everyone has a journey to accomplish, and you cannot obstruct their paths. You can offer help, but if they don’t accept, you have to move aside and cheer them to go ahead. As you learn to respect people’s choices, you can feel your baggage getting lighter.

I know you still need to reach your destiny. But you have come a long way, and I respect you for making every decision so far. It was not easy for you. It still is not going to be. But I know you deserve a space in this world, and YOU BELONG. I will wait at the other end of the line to celebrate YOU.

Love,

23-year old you.
